Episcopal Diocese of Wisconsin Director of Communications

The Diocese of Wisconsin seeks a director of communications to coordinate communications activities, including public relations and marketing.

About the Episcopal Diocese of Wisconsin

The recently reunited diocese is comprised of 100 Episcopal congregations across the entire state of Wisconsin. The diocese is home to an Episcopal Seminary, a number of organizations serving people in need of food and other types of basic assistance, and a well-established housing complex for seniors. There are a number of active relationships with companion dioceses and ministries across the globe. We are excited about the new possibilities presented by our renewed diocese and are looking for another member of the team to help communicate what is happening, who we are, and the importance of our mission and ministry.

The successful candidate will:

Oversee all aspects of communications—internal and external communications, storytelling, PR, websites, technology, software, resources for congregations.
Work collaboratively with a diocesan staff and reports to the Canon to the Ordinary.
Consult with local congregations and other ministries about websites and other communication needs.
Collaborate with the bishop, the Canon to the Ordinary, diocesan staff and entities in developing a communications strategy to promote key messages regarding the diocese and its ministries and circulating those messages on the diocesan website, digital newsletters, social media and through the news media.
Serve as editor and primary writer of e-newsletters.
Actively pursue stories from around the diocese to share with the whole diocese, the rest of the Episcopal Church, and secular media
Review parish websites for structure, style and content and make recommendations for improvements that will enable growth in parish interface with their local communities and congregations.
Manage the diocesan website in a way that keeps content clear, easily accessible, timely, interesting, and engaging.
Cultivate an informative and lively online presence for the diocese including strategies for digital outreach
Collaborate with the bishop and Canon to the Ordinary on messages from the bishop occasioned by the church calendar, parish life, news developments, etc.
Draft statements for the bishop as needed, or provide editorial review of statements before production and distribution, writing as needed/necessary.
Monitor Episcopal Church news services and announcements for opportunities and in particular grant applications for program funding for the Diocese.
Manage donations appeals for programs including the Haiti Partnership the companion dioceses and others.
Produce the Haiti Partnership Quarterly newsletter and other ad-hoc communications as required.
Coordinate communications activities, including public relations and marketing. Initiate and maintain contacts with secular media. Develop and deliver media training and resources for congregations and other diocesan entities.
Record and edit video communications
Manage diocesan asset map
Engagement with Episcopal Communicators group as a way of building collegiality and staying up to date on best practices and professional development
Enhance the ability of the bishop and the diocese to spread the gospel and media outlets across the state as needed
Collaborate with the Canon to the Ordinary in developing a digital means for members of the diocese who live at great distances from one another to remain in contact about common mission initiatives, community, and connection.
Qualifications and Experience:

The successful candidate will have at a minimum a bachelor’s degree in communications, digital marketing, marketing, journalism or a comparable commercially oriented discipline.
The successful candidate will think strategically and have strong writing and editing skills. A firm knowledge of news media and a willingness to work as part of a diocesan staff are key. An ability to highlight parishes and ministries across the state (and so some in an interesting and engaging way, and an understanding of religious faith and how faith shapes issues, community life and culture are important. This role will involve some travel.
4-5 years proven ability/experience in hands-on print and electronic communications, media relations, social media
Excellent verbal, written and communications skills
Experience with multiple website content management systems
Ability to work on deadlines and to react to time-sensitive events
Initiative and ability to evolve the position to add value to the Diocese and its parishes.
Experience in development/fundraising communications is desirable
Hands-on knowledge of PC computers and software
This role will include some special events (for example, annual convention) and may involve some evening work or coverage of special events. There is a disbursed staff model with weekly check-ins by video and a monthly, mandatory in-person staff meeting.
Must have a valid driver’s license, access to transportation, and insurance to mandated state requirements
Compensation

Compensation that includes health insurance and pension contributions at a total compensation cost of between $80k and $120k, depending on the qualifications, skills and years of relevant experience of the successful candidate.
The compensation package includes four paid weeks of vacation, sick and personal days, and holidays.
