WHO WE ARE
The Humane League (THL) is a global nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, we've grown to a staff of 100+ talented individuals dispersed across the country and around the world. At THL, how animals are treated in the food system is at the forefront of our everyday work. As such, many of our staff are vegan by personal choice, and all of our THL-hosted events offer fully vegan menus. We welcome all mission-aligned candidates to apply, no matter where you are in your journey to end the abuse of animals raised for food.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY
As CEO of The Humane League (THL), you are a visionary leader with an unwavering commitment to ending the abuse of animals raised for food. You lead a key organization in the movement to end farmed animal suffering. You supervise THL's Executive Vice President and General Counsel and report to the Board of Directors. You inspire and guide THL towards its mission and work to achieve the movement's vision of a better world for animals.

Fostering agency and accountability is at the heart of your leadership style. You view challenges as opportunities for innovation and growth, and you continuously seek actionable solutions to drive progress for animals. You prioritize open, clear, and transparent communication and welcome diverse perspectives. With genuine care for each individual's development, you are dedicated to having honest conversations that support personal and professional growth, ensuring that each team member is in the right role for their unique strengths.

As CEO, you are accountable for ensuring THL's cultural and organizational goals are accomplished. You lead the team in making well-informed decisions, navigating uncertainties, taking calculated risks, and learning from setbacks. You are a thought leader with a clear, strategic vision for the organization, aligning short-term goals with long-term objectives. You anticipate future trends, challenges, and opportunities, inspiring confidence in staff and guiding the organization towards the fulfillment of its mission with integrity and purpose.

You possess exceptional communication and fundraising skills, which enable you to persuade and inspire a wide range of audiences to join us in our mission. You develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, building shared power throughout the animal protection movement. You also have a robust understanding of the financial aspects of the organization; you ensure sustainable growth, budget effectively, and make decisions that balance mission and financial health. You're willing to make tough choices in the best interests of the organization.

This is a full-time, remote position, based in the United States. This position requires domestic and international travel equivalent to 10 or more trips per year. Because THL is a global organization, you may be required to work hours outside of 9am - 5pm, depending on your time zone.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership and Vision
Ensure that The Humane League has a multi-year strategy towards the achievement of its mission and makes consistent and timely progress in line with this strategy.
Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in animal protection. Consult frequently with expert Programs employees.
Operational Leadership
Lead THL's Executive Team, ensuring it operates with high performance and alignment around shared goals and vision. Cultivate a team that makes informed decisions, discusses strategy, and resolves problems.
Provide leadership in developing programmatic and organizational plans with the Board of Directors and staff.
Public Representation and Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as an exceptional spokesperson for THL, representing the organization's programs and point of view and raising the visibility of mission-related issues to the media, funders, other organizations, and the general public.
Effectively communicate about the welfare reforms that THL is working to implement and how they will reduce farmed animal suffering. Make final animal welfare policy position decisions for THL.
Collaborate with the Communications department to create compelling content, including op-eds and blog posts.
Establish sound working relationships and strategic partnerships with other organizations and represent THL at coalition meetings, conferences, and events.
Fundraising and Development
Work with the Development department to set realistic fundraising goals. Establish and maintain positive relationships with major individual donors and foundations. You are ultimately responsible for ensuring THL meets its fundraising goals.
Contribute to the preparation of proposals to fund THL's work and make asks for financial support.
Participate in Town Hall calls, house parties, and other speaking opportunities to raise funds.
Financial Oversight and Accountability
Maintain a high-level understanding of the organization's financial position in order to make relevant executive decisions, ensuring the organization's financial health and resource allocation align with its goals.
Submit a proposed annual budget to the Board and ensure that regular, accurate financial statements are presented at Board meetings.
Governance and Board Relations
Support the recruitment and selection of new Board members.
Meet at least quarterly with the Board of Directors to ensure that the Board is kept informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it. Engage Board members in volunteer opportunities.
Meet regularly with the Board Chair and Vice Chair to discuss events between Board meetings.
In addition to the above essential job duties, other duties may be assigned as business needs arise. These may include non-essential, marginal job duties.
