Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be a Catholic in good standing with a deep understanding of communication and media strategy. A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field required (master’s degree preferred). Minimum of 10 years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or media management, with at least three years in a leadership role.
Proven experience in crisis communication and media relations. Strong understanding of Catholic media, Church hierarchy, and diocesan structures. Excellent writing, editing, public speaking, and strategic communication skills. Proficiency in digital media, social media platforms, and website management. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed. Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Some travel is required for conferences, meetings, and media engagements.
Working Conditions:
This position is Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM and located in the Pastoral Center in Richmond. There is regular travel to parishes and events as required throughout the diocese, which includes occasional nights and weekends. The Pastoral Center offices are a collaborative, dynamic environment with frequent interactions with clergy, diocesan staff, media representatives, and community leaders.

The Catholic Diocese of Richmond, VA is seeking a Director of Communications to support the mission of the diocesan Office of Communications.
The Director of Communications is a Cabinet level position within the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. This role oversees all communication initiatives of the Diocese, ensuring alignment with the mission and values of the Catholic Church. The Director is responsible for overseeing the Catholic Virginian newspaper and its editorial staff, as well as managing strategic communications, media relations, the diocese’s digital presence, and crisis communications. The position requires a strong commitment to advancing the Church’s mission through effective communication and engagement with clergy, staff, parishioners, and the public.
