Knowledge of philanthropy, including a demonstrated record of soliciting major gifts.
Willingness to learn specific information about Thomas Jefferson and Monticello, including through Monticello’s Guide Training to learn how to communicate difficult history as well as the Foundation's educational mission to donors.
Ability to exercise good judgment, demonstrate an understanding of the ethical principles associated with working in development, and to use discretion in interactions with members of the Monticello community.
Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, along with the ability to work with diverse internal and external constituencies including donors and volunteers.
Proven ability to work effectively with honesty and transparency in a collaborative, multi-level team environment with a high degree of collegiality.

Physical Demands and Work Considerations:
The Director of Major Gifts must have a valid Driver's License with personal vehicle and ability and willingness to travel as needed, including for frequent weekend and evening commitments. Monticello is located on a mountaintop and the Director of Major Gifts must be able to walk on steep inclines as well as uneven and rocky terrain.
Education:
A Bachelor’s Degree is required. A minimum of six to eight years of experience in frontline fundraising with a proven track record of success is required alongside a minimum of one to three years of management experience, or significant experience as a leader on a team of gift officers, providing peer coaching, training, and mentoring.

Director of Major Gifts
Purpose:
The Director of Major Gifts is responsible for the overall management of Monticello’s evolving major giving program which has goals of helping to build the donor pipeline and of securing support to empower Monticello’s mission and vision. The Director will oversee a team of development officers who manage portfolios containing individual, corporation, and foundation prospects, and who also share in responsibility for the execution of Monticello’s growing donor relations program. Leading by example, the Director will manage a portfolio of high potential prospects, identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting them for 5- to 7-figure gifts, including planned gifts. Working closely with the Chief Development Officer, the Director will be responsible for setting and meeting annual performance metrics on an individual and team basis, developing annual and long-term (including campaign) fundraising strategies with Development and Foundation leadership. Alongside Development leadership and colleagues in External Relations, the Director will also be a key leader and strategist for the Foundation’s evolving donor relations program, which includes the existing Monticello Cabinet (leadership annual giving) and Portico Society (planned giving), as well as a developing membership model which will aid in growing the donor pipeline. The Director will be an entrepreneurial self-starter who is forward thinking, collaborative, and able to manage multiple priorities.
Essential Functions:
Manages Monticello’s evolving major giving program, which includes supervision of a team of Development Officers and management of own portfolio.
Train, develop, and supervise a team of development officers who manage portfolios containing individual, corporation, and foundation prospects, and who also share responsibility for execution of the donor relations program which supports the major giving pipeline.
Working closely with the Chief Development Officer, build major giving program infrastructure, including but not limited to the creation of documented processes and procedures, gift officer metrics, and development talking points.
Manage a portfolio of assigned high potential prospects and through personal and virtual engagement, identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, close, and steward prospects for leadership and major level gifts, to include planned gifts.
Meet activity and revenue goals through personal outreach. Travel is required as necessary to achieve 50+ meetings a year, as well as goals for qualification and solicitation. In addition to making major gift solicitations, the Director will make regular leadership annual fund solicitation phone calls and send personal emails to augment the face-to-face meetings to achieve growing financial goals.
Formulate and implement strategies for short-and long-term giving outcomes, devising performance metrics, and collaborating with the broader Development team, the President’s Office, Office of External Relations and other partners across the Foundation.
Ensure compliance with prospect management guidelines for data entry and metrics tracking for self and Development Officers.
Maintains strategic oversight, in close collaboration with colleagues in External Relations, of the Foundation’s donor relations program which recognizes annual donors giving 4-figure gifts or higher, and planned gifts of all levels through the Monticello Cabinet, Portico Society, and a developing membership model.:
Develop a plan (and ensure its execution through supervisory duties) to cultivate and steward recognition and membership groups to both fuel Monticello’s annual fund and grow its major gifts pipeline, through virtual and in-person events, peer-to-peer fundraising efforts, various benefit offerings such as Special Tours, ongoing communications and publications, stewardship touches, and more.
Collaborate closely with the Annual Giving & Operations Manager to analyze donor and membership data, develop cohesive messaging across development and membership channels, and partner on development initiatives and special projects.
Collaborate closely with colleagues in External Relations to ensure development events are strategic, donor-centric, and mission-aligned.
