Required Experience:
Qualifications
Minimum 8–10 years of senior leadership or operational management experience, ideally within a
nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
Proven ability to manage cross-functional teams and execute strategic priorities.
Demonstrated capabilities and success with business marketing and communications programs.
Strong financial acumen and experience with budgeting, compliance, and reporting.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Passion for wildlife conservation and familiarity with issues affecting western landscapes is a strong
plus.

Position Title: Chief Operating Officer
Location: Flexible (Remote or Clearfield, UT Headquarters)
Reports To: President/CEO

The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) is a leading wildlife conservation nonprofit dedicated to the conservation
of mule deer, black-tailed deer, and their habitats. With a growing team of dedicated professionals, MDF works
across the West with federal, state, and private partners to restore habitat, engage members, and promote
responsible stewardship of our natural heritage. An understanding of the hunting industry is required.
We are seeking a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to serve as a key member of our executive leadership team.
The COO will play a central role in supporting the CEO, overseeing internal operations, advancing strategic
priorities, and driving cross-functional coordination to ensure the successful execution of our mission. Ideal
candidates will have knowledge of the Mule Deer Foundation’s mission and values, as well as experience
within the hunting community and an understanding of the hunting industry.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership
Serve as the second-in-command and act on behalf of the CEO when unavailable.
Represent the CEO and MDF at internal and external meetings and events.
Provide leadership and oversight for implementing MDF’s Strategic Plan across departments.
Assist in developing and monitoring annual performance plans for executive team members.
Operational Management
Provide leadership within an organization that has more than 90% of its staff working remotely.
Ensure effective and efficient day-to-day operations aligned with MDF’s organizational goals.
Provide program supervision and functional support to program managers across departments, with a
particular emphasis on internal operations, business practices and communications.
Oversee development and implementation of administrative processes and policies.
Financial Oversight
Partner with the CFO to prepare annual budgets, support audits, and ensure fiscal and grant compliance.
Work with the CEO to obtain concurrence on financials for Board of Directors’ consideration.
Monitor monthly revenue and expense reports; provide updates to leadership.
Review and sign MDF contracts to ensure policy and fiscal alignment.
Strategic and Program Support
Lead high-level implementation of the Strategic Plan, translating priorities into action.
Oversee development of MDF’s Annual Report in collaboration with programs and communications
teams.
Support conservation and habitat projects through coordination and problem-solving.
Human Resources & Culture
Review employee Conflict of Interest disclosures annually and address issues.
Lead the development and evaluation of quarterly employee surveys.
Foster a respectful, inclusive, and high-performing workplace culture across the organization.
Governance and Compliance
Ensure MDF complies with nonprofit governance standards and internal policies.
Provide strategic and operational updates to the Board as requested.
Perform additional duties as assigned to advance MDF’s mission and effectiveness.
