How you’ll make impact:
State Policy Network is growing rapidly! We’re seeking a Major Gift Officer (MGO) to join our growing development team. This is an exciting opportunity to help scale our $27M+ fundraising efforts by building and managing a portfolio of generous supporters over a national territory. You will develop meaningful relationships, inspire donors with SPN’s vision, and secure resources that fuel the Network’s mission. If you have 5+ years’ experience cultivating and closing major gifts—and you’re motivated by advancing liberty across the states—this might be your dream job.

Your Day-to-Day:
Build, manage, and grow a portfolio of ~100+ current and prospective donors capable of gifts of $25,000+.
Cultivate, solicit, and steward donors through personal meetings, events, and consistent follow-up (travel up to 40%).
Create compelling donor strategies and funding opportunities that align donor passions with SPN’s priorities.
Write persuasive proposals, gift agreements, stewardship reports, and donor communications.
Partner with senior leadership and colleagues to coordinate cultivation strategies and solicitations.
Track progress and maintain accurate records in Salesforce.
Consistently meet or exceed fundraising goals tied to your portfolio.
TLDR? We’re looking for…
Proven success managing major donor portfolios and closing gifts of $25,000+.
Fire in the belly! – To be successful you’ll need to build your portfolio through prospecting.
Strategic relationship builder who is both entrepreneurial and disciplined.
Ability to prioritize, follow through, and juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Experience with a CRM platform such as Salesforce.
Experience with planned giving, complex giving vehicles, or estate planning is a plus.
High integrity, professionalism, and discretion.
Willingness and ability to travel by air.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and be comfortable driving for work-related travel when necessary.
Are YOU a good fit at SPN?
Are you Mission-Bound? Everything we do at SPN is in service to the restoration of individual rights and self-governance. We pursue excellence in our work and set aside our pride and differences to commit ourselves to this end.
Are you Candid and Humble? We give and receive honest and respectful feedback with the assumption of positive intent. We deal with problems and conflict directly with the individuals involved. We are open to challenges, eager to learn, and willing to acknowledge mistakes to improve.
Are you Entrepreneurial? We seek opportunities, embrace innovation, and take prudent risk with a bias toward action. We test, fail small, and scale our successes. We’re resilient but also nimble, looking for the potential in every challenge.
Are you Relational? Trust and respect are built over time through competence, reliability, and integrity. We establish credibility through meaningful relationships, demonstrating value before expecting influence or partnership.

Full job description
State Policy Network is a coalition of 64 state think tanks representing all 50 states, over 66 state allied organizations in key capacities (like litigation, journalism, and issue advocacy), and 107 national partners, all dedicated to the principles of liberty and federalism. SPN exists to make these organizations better, faster, and stronger than if each worked alone. The power of the Network is in scaling critical state and local solutions so they spread from state to state, leading to national impact.
Major Gift Officer
Location: Washington, DC or Virtual Office
Job Type: Full-time

About Us (and You):
At State Policy Network, we’re building an America where personal freedom, innovation, and opportunity empower everyone to thrive. We’re a national nonprofit—but more than that, we’re the connector and champion behind a growing movement of state-based think tanks and partners working toward a freer society.

That’s where you come in. In this role, you won’t just be a spectator—you’ll be in the thick of it, working alongside bold leaders to ignite durable, state-level freedom movements. Together, we’ll help high-performing, independent think tanks make a real impact—one state at a time.
