Required Experience:

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in nonprofit management, public policy, business, or related field preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 3-5 years of leadership experience in nonprofit, public policy, philanthropy, or community development.
Demonstrated success in coalition building, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement.
Experience working with or within the United Way network strongly preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong strategic thinking and facilitation skills.
Excellent communication, public speaking, and relationship-building abilities.
Political acumen and ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments.
Fundraising and partnership development experience.
Other Requirements:
Ability to travel statewide and occasionally nationally.
Residence in Kansas.

Job Description

Position Title: State Director
Organization: United Ways of Kansas
Reports To: Board of Directors, United Ways of Kansas Executive Committee
Location: Statewide – based in Kansas (hybrid/remote with statewide travel required)

Position Summary

The State Director of United Ways of Kansas provides strategic leadership, advocacy, and coordination on behalf of all United Ways across the state. This role ensures that local United Ways are supported, connected, and equipped to drive measurable community impact. The State Director serves as a convener, relationship builder, and advocate, representing the collective voice of United Ways of Kansas with policymakers, partners, and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Collaboration

Facilitate alignment of statewide strategies that strengthen the collective impact of Kansas United Ways.
Provide leadership in identifying and addressing common priorities across member organizations.
Convene and support peer learning, capacity-building, and best practice sharing.
Advance ALICE work across the state.
Advocacy & Public Policy

Serve as the primary advocate for United Ways of Kansas on state-level policy issues impacting youth opportunities, financial security, healthy communities and community resiliency.
Build relationships with state legislators, agencies, and other advocacy partners.
Coordinate statewide public policy agenda in collaboration with local United Way leaders.
Resource Development & Partnerships

Cultivate partnerships with state and regional organizations, corporations, and funders to expand opportunities for local United Ways.
Support collaborative funding initiatives that benefit the statewide network.
Identify opportunities for joint grant applications, sponsorships, and shared services.
Network Engagement & Communication

Serve as a connector between United Way Worldwide, regional peers, and Kansas United Ways.
Maintain consistent communication with local United Way CEOs and boards.
Represent the network at conferences, coalitions, and public events.
Administration & Governance

Manage the operations of United Ways of Kansas, including budget, compliance, and reporting.
Provide staff support to the United Ways of Kansas Board of Directors and committees.
Ensure accountability to members through transparency, clear outcomes, and regular reporting.
