Get Lit, https://www.getlit.org is a Los Angeles based non-profit impacting literacy, wellness, creativity, and workforce development for young people through spoken word poetry and media. It was established in 2006 to increase literacy and energize communities. Get Lit has been growing ever since, serving 326 schools and thousands of students worldwide.
The Creative Communications Director will lead and execute Get Lit’s communications strategy ensuring consistency in brand messaging, voice, and storytelling. This role requires a strategic thinker and skilled communicator who can collaborate across departments to elevate the organization’s mission, programs, and impact. The Creative Communications Director will be a key driver in shaping how Get Lit communicates with the world.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Communication Strategy & Management
● Lead and develop Get Lit’s communications goals, editorial calendars, brand messaging, and narrative direction in alignment with the mission and strategic goals.
● Collaborate across departments—especially Development, Programs, and Media—to anticipate communication needs and provide consistent, mission-aligned messaging.
● Build and manage communications-related projects in Asana, ensuring clear timelines and task assignments.
● Manage the organization’s contact and communication records in HubSpot to support development, marketing, and outreach efforts.
● Create messaging documents and talking points for the Executive Director and other public-facing staff.
● Support board relations and visibility efforts through strategic internal and external storytelling.
Website & Digital Presence Oversight
● Oversee strategy and updates for the Get Lit website in collaboration with the Head of Technology, ensuring timely and accessible content.
● Lead SEO and content planning across blogs, landing pages, and donor-facing content.
● Manage analytics tracking and reporting for web and digital communications performance.
External Communications
● Develop and manage editorial calendars for newsletters, e-blasts, and public updates.
● Lead concepting and execution of communications campaigns, initiatives, and key promotions.
● Supervise coordination with graphic designers, photographers, and media vendors.
● Ensure consistency in design and voice across all materials, including decks, printed assets, and press communications.
● Represent Get Lit at events and speaking engagements as needed, providing live updates or coverage support.
Cross-Departmental Coordination
● Work closely with the Development department to align campaign messaging with donor outreach and fundraising goals.
● Coordinate with Program leads to surface and elevate stories of impact across youth programs, including data-informed testimonials.
● Ensure communications team meets internal deadlines related to events, campaigns, and strategic priorities.
● Collaborate with the Deputy Director and other department heads to ensure that communication strategy supports overall financial and operational goals.
Staff Management & Collaboration
● Supervise communications support staff, interns, and vendors.
● Participate in weekly leadership team meetings and organizational planning retreats.
● Maintain a clear system of progress tracking and accountability in Asana for all communications-related initiatives.
