Full job description
Reporting Structure: This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer and works closely with the President & CEO, Board of Directors, Senior Leadership, and Development team. The position is based in Birmingham, AL.

Position Summary:

Women’s Foundation of Alabama (WFA) envisions a society where power and possibility are not limited by gender, race, or place. We leverage our influence to build gender, racial, and economic equity for women statewide. As Alabama’s only statewide public women’s foundation, we channel investments into community-based initiatives with a gender lens, produce and disseminate research to inform policy, and advocate for systemic change that enables women and families to thrive.

Following the historic success of its $10 million Watershed Campaign, the Women’s Foundation of Alabama is at a pivotal moment of growth and transformation. The campaign not only secured unprecedented resources but also elevated WFA’s profile as a formidable agent for change. The charge now is to build upon this momentum, institutionalizing the fundraising success of the campaign to create a sustainable, diversified, and ever-growing revenue engine that will power our mission for years to come.

To lead this critical work, WFA seeks a seasoned and relational development leader to serve as its next Vice President of Development. This is more than a fundraising role; it is an opportunity to serve as a key planner of WFA’s future. The VP of Development will be responsible for transitioning a milestone achievement into a durable, long-term fundraising program. This leader will steward the invaluable relationships built during the campaign, inspire new levels of giving from individuals and institutions, and build the infrastructure necessary for scalable growth. As a key member of the senior leadership team, the VP will inspire confidence among donors, partners, and stakeholders, translating WFA’s vision into tangible investment opportunities that power real change for women and families across Alabama.

The Vice President of Development is a senior leader responsible for shaping and executing a comprehensive fundraising and resource development strategy that sustains and grows the Women’s Foundation of Alabama’s statewide impact. As WFA’s fundraising strategist and senior major gift officer, this role oversees the design, management, and implementation of a fundraising program aligned with the Foundation’s current needs and long-term goals for sustainability and growth. The ideal candidate combines strategic vision with relational depth—someone who can think at scale, execute with precision, and lead with authenticity. They will bring exceptional fundraising acumen, a collaborative mindset, and a deep commitment to advancing gender and economic equity.

Roles and Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy and Oversight:

· Lead the design and execution of WFA’s multi-year development strategy in partnership with Executive Leadership, aligning fundraising goals with the organization’s mission, statewide growth priorities, and financial objectives.

· Drive a comprehensive fundraising program that integrates annual giving, corporate and foundation support, planned giving, and major gifts into one cohesive and measurable plan.

· Steward and sustain the success of WFA’s completed $10 million Watershed Campaign by deepening donor relationships, ensuring long-term engagement, and converting campaign supporters into recurring major and annual funders.

· Expand and diversify revenue streams through new and renewed corporate, foundation, and institutional partnerships, government grants, sponsorships, and emerging philanthropic vehicles.

· Establish and grow WFA’s planned giving program, building long-term revenue stability through bequests, endowments, and multi-year commitments.

· Set and achieve annual revenue goals aligned with organizational budgets and strategic priorities, ensuring consistent progress toward long-term sustainability.

· Collaborate with the President & CEO, COO, and Board of Directors to strengthen a culture of philanthropy and shared accountability for fundraising success.

· Design and implement a robust Board giving and engagement strategy, ensuring every Board member is both an investor in and ambassador for WFA’s mission.

· Serve as the staff lead to the Board Development Committee, partnering with its Chair to set agendas, provide data-driven updates, and equip members with the tools and messaging to effectively champion WFA statewide.

· Provide support to the Board of Directors in donor cultivation, stewardship, and peer-to-peer engagement efforts, reinforcing WFA’s collective leadership in advancing women’s economic opportunity.

Financial Stewardship and Operations:

· Provide strategic oversight of the Development department’s financial health, including revenue forecasting, expense management, and progress toward annual and multi-year fundraising goals.

· Develop and manage the department’s annual budget, aligning income and expenditure projections with organizational priorities and ensuring fiscal accountability across all fundraising activities.

· Establish clear performance metrics and goals for the Development team, monitoring progress through monthly and quarterly reviews to ensure consistent achievement of fundraising objectives.

· Partner with the COO and Accounting team to ensure accurate reconciliation of contributions, pledge tracking, and reporting in accordance with accounting and audit standards.

· Use data and analysis to drive decision-making, informing strategies for revenue growth, donor retention, and operational efficiency.

Team Leadership and Organizational Alignment:

· Lead, mentor, and inspire a high-performing Development team, including the Corporate and Foundation Relations Officer and Development Associate, ensuring accountability to departmental goals and alignment with WFA’s strategic priorities.

· Translate annual fundraising objectives into actionable, measurable plans, ensuring clarity of roles, timelines, and deliverables across all levels of development activity.

· Provide strategic direction and coaching to staff on donor engagement, proposal development, and operational problem-solving to ensure excellence in execution.

· Model and cultivate a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning, reinforcing WFA’s values of equity, integrity, and excellence in every aspect of fundraising.

· Oversee the implementation of multi-tiered solicitation strategies, ensuring consistency, discipline, and donor-centered practices at every giving level.

· Deliver regular progress reports and insights to Executive Leadership and the Board, using data and analysis to drive accountability and inform decision-making.

· Serve as a thought leader and internal expert on best practices in development, philanthropy, and donor strategy, helping position WFA as a benchmark organization in the field.

Donor and Partner Engagement:

· Serve as WFA’s fundraising leader and relationship strategist, responsible for securing the annual revenue required to sustain and expand the Foundation’s statewide impact.

· Design and implement donor engagement strategies that prioritize relationship building, long-term stewardship, and meaningful donor experiences.

· Lead cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors, personally managing a portfolio of principal gift prospects ($100,000+) and institutional funders.

· Direct and oversee all fundraising initiatives and events, ensuring strategic coordination across major gifts, planned giving, corporate partnerships, and annual campaigns.

· Develop and deliver compelling proposals, presentations, and impact reports that translate WFA’s mission and results into investment opportunities.

· Strengthen donor recognition and stewardship systems, ensuring all supporters are acknowledged in timely, meaningful, and mission-aligned ways.

· Leverage data and analytics to drive donor segmentation, retention, and growth strategies, maintaining accuracy and integrity within WFA’s donor database.

· Collaborate with the Vice President of External Affairs to align fundraising communications, marketing collateral, and thought leadership opportunities with donor engagement goals.

· Represent WFA in high-level external meetings and public forums, cultivating strategic relationships and visibility statewide.
