Minimum of Bachelor’s in related field
Minimum 5 years of nonprofit leadership experience
Proven success in fundraising and grant management
Strong understanding of supportive housing models and HUD regulations
Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed care
Excellent communication, financial management, and organizational skills
Preferred
Masters degree in related field
Experience with tax-credit properties and subsidized housing programs
Familiarity with landlord/tenant rights and Fair Housing practices
Experience working with rural communities and cross-sector partnerships

Position: Executive Director
Location: Traverse City, MI
Reports to: Board of Directors
Status: Full-time, Exempt
Salary Range: Salary commensurate with experience ($85,000 minimum) + Benefits
OVERVIEW:
Mission
NMSH provides permanent supportive housing and services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness who struggle with mental illness in Northwest Michigan. We believe housing is a human right and that stability is the foundation for recovery, dignity, and community connection.
Position Summary
The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive of NMSH, responsible for advancing the mission through strategic leadership, operational oversight, fund development and community engagement. The ED ensures financial sustainability, program excellence, and a trauma-informed, equity-centered organizational culture.
SCOPE OF WORK:
Strategic Leadership
Lead the development and execution of strategic plans aligned with NMSH’s mission and values
Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement
Represent NMSH in regional coalitions, advocacy efforts, and public forums
Fundraising & Donor Relations
Cultivate relationships with individual donors, foundations, and government funders
Oversee grant writing, reporting, and compliance
Collaborate with the Board on fundraising strategy and donor stewardship
Program Oversight
Ensure high-quality delivery of supportive housing services in compliance with HUD and local regulations
Monitor program outcomes and use data to inform decisions
Support staff in implementing trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices
Financial & Operational Management
Develop and manage annual budget in partnership with the Board Treasurer
Oversee financial reporting, audits, and risk management
Ensure compliance with nonprofit governance standards and employment law
Staff Leadership
Hire, supervise, and support a dedicated team of housing and administrative professionals
Promote staff wellbeing, professional development, and clear communication
Maintain a collaborative, respectful workplace culture
Board Engagement
Serve as primary liaison to the Board of Directors
Provide timely updates, strategic guidance, and support for governance activities
Assist with board recruitment, orientation, and development
