Required Experience:
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, public administration, or related field.
· Minimum 2 years of progressive leadership experience in a nonprofit or animal welfare organization.
· Proven success in fundraising, financial oversight, and staff management.
· Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
· Passion for animal welfare and community engagement.
· Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors preferred.

About Us
Middleburg Humane Foundation is a nonprofit animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in need. We are passionate advocates for animal welfare through community outreach and humane education. Each year, we provide lifesaving care to approximately 1000+ animals and support families through adoption, spay/neuter, TNR, food assistance, humane education, internships, and volunteerism.
Position Overview
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer and is the public face that will increase MHF’s profile throughout the region. The ED is responsible for the strategic leadership, fiscal management, and operational excellence of the organization. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the ED ensures that all programs align with the shelter’s mission and that resources are used effectively to maximize impact in the community.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Management:
· Ensures ongoing program excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration systems, including managing income and expenditures to achieve or exceed the financial goals specified in the annual budget.
· Recommendation of timelines and resources needed to achieve goals, including the development of annual and future budgets.
· Engages and energizes the organization’s staff, board members, program volunteers, donors, special committees, and other strategic partners to achieve goals.
· Serves as the point of contact for all regulatory-related issues, including Town, County, State, and others. Maintains and improves MHF’s relationship with all outside stakeholders, government entities, fellow animal service organizations, and community organizations.
· Hires, leads, coaches, and maintains a high-performance staff. Ensure that each staff member has a job description and the training necessary to perform the necessary functions. Sets annual objectives with staff members, tracks progress on a regular basis and provides direct reports with annual performance evaluations.
· Attend regular board meetings and provide the board with regular reporting of performance relative to goals.
Fundraising, Development, Communications:
· Supervises and supports the Director of Development in implementing a comprehensive annual strategic fundraising plan driven by the annual business plan and budgetary goals. Determines the optimal allocation of the available resources to best achieve the fundraising goals.
· Oversee program grant writing and grant reporting in compliance with program goals and strategies. Ensure grant proposals are consistent with MHF’s mission, policies and capabilities, are accurate and that all reports or other feedback requirements and restrictions are documented and tracked to ensure timely, accurate reporting.
· Collaborates with staff and MHF committees to ensure the development and implementation of an annual strategic communications plan designed to achieve the annual fundraising and business plan, and to achieve broader awareness of the organization’s mission and capabilities. Actively leads and participates in communications with all constituents (donors, volunteers, community leaders, community members, etc.).
· Works with the social media team to enhance and expand effective plans for a secure web and social media presence to further awareness among constituents.
· Keeps staff informed on a regular basis of current board activities and decisions, including all policies and procedures that govern staff activities and relationships.
Financial Stewardship/Risk Management:
· Manage an annual budget of $1.6 million to ensure sound financial practices, transparency, and compliance.
· Identify risks and implement procedures to mitigate and control them to include (but not limited to) risks to clients, staff, volunteers, property, finance, goodwill, and image.
· Along with CFO and Treasurer, manages outside accounting firm and internal staff to ensure that all income, expenses, assets, and liabilities are recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for a 50l(c)(3) non-profit corporation.
· Reviews all annual/term contracts including insurance. If appropriate, bids out contracts and insurance to ensure that MHF is obtaining competitive terms and rates.
· Ensure all OSHA regulations are adhered to and that appropriate safety procedures and training are in place and updated regularly.
