Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience required in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Communications, or related field; Master’s preferred.
8-10 years of progressive fundraising/development experience preferred, including at least 3 years in a senior leadership role.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proven track record of successful major gift solicitations, event fundraising, grants, and donor engagement.
Strong leadership experience with direct reports and managing cross-functional teams/contractors.
Excellent relationship-building, communication (written/verbal), presentation, and public speaking skills.
Familiarity with IDD services or experience with nonprofit organizations serving individuals with disabilities is highly preferred.
Ability to work remotely/hybrid, travel as needed within the region, and engage with diverse stakeholders.
Proficient in donor database systems, fundraising technologies, analytics, and Microsoft Office suite.
Physical Demands:
Ability to move and stand for prolonged periods.
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting up to 25 pounds.
Ability to kneel, stand, sit, crawl, crouch, reach, or climb as needed.
Working Conditions:
Community-based and office settings with regular travel to employment and support sites. Hybrid position with limited in-office time.

Choices for People provides year-round support and instructional programs designed to aid individuals with disabilities in developing essential life skills. These skills promote inclusion, independence, self-sufficiency, and productivity; and aim to maximize the individual’s quality of life in the least restrictive environment possible.
Choices for People assists in individual goal-oriented program planning, and acts as an advocate in the community through the removal of attitudinal, architectural, environmental, financial, employment-related, communicational, transportation, and other barriers.

Job Title: CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (CDO)

Starting Salary Range: $95,000-$115,000

Position Summary
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) leads the strategic direction and execution of all fundraising, development, and partnership efforts for Choices for People. Reporting directly to the CEO, this position oversees donor relations, major gifts, grants, marketing, and community engagement to advance the organization’s mission of supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The CDO manages a small team, including marketing and event staff, and collaborates across departments to strengthen financial sustainability, enhance public awareness, and build lasting relationships with key stakeholders and supporters.
Duties and Responsibilities (not all inclusive)
1. Strategic Fundraising & Development
Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy (individual giving, major gifts, corporate & foundation grants, events, planned giving, digital campaigns).
Set and monitor fundraising goals, timelines, resource allocation, and performance metrics.
Collaborate with the CEO, Board of Directors, and leadership team to align development efforts with organizational goals and its mission.
Cultivate and steward relationships with current and prospective donors, foundations, corporate sponsors, and community partners.
Oversee grant research, proposal writing, grant reporting, and compliance with funder requirements.
Partner with marketing/communications to tell compelling stories, build brand awareness, and engage community stakeholders.
2. Team Leadership & Collaboration
Supervise the Director of Marketing and event coordinator role; manage contractor/consultant relationships (social media specialist, videographer, grant writer).
Foster a collaborative culture across development, marketing, programs, and operations to leverage opportunities and ensure integrated efforts.
Provide mentorship, performance management, and professional development for the development team.
3. Partnerships & Community Engagement
Actively build and maintain strategic partnerships with businesses, civic groups, service providers, families, and government agencies relevant to IDD services.
Represent the organization at community events, donor engagements, and networking forums to raise awareness and secure support.
Ensure development efforts reflect the culture, values, and priorities of the communities we serve.
4. Data, Reporting & Accountability
Oversee donor database management, tracking of giving trends, and analytics to guide strategic decisions.
Prepare regular reports for the CEO and Board on fundraising progress, outcomes, and opportunities.
Ensure compliance with ethical fundraising standards and legal/regulatory requirements.
Monitor ROI on development activities and drive continuous improvement.
