ABOUT THE BOX SHOP

The Box Shop is a collaborative industrial workspace located in San Francisco's Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood, providing access to shared equipment and affordable studios for artists. It supports creators in developing unique, large-scale, and intricate projects within spacious indoor and outdoor workspaces. Rooted in community, The Box Shop prioritizes artists in underrepresented communities and fosters collaboration among makers of all skill levels. Each year, it engages over 300 community participants in art-making while hosting over 100 studio members. Known for its commitment to inclusivity, The Box Shop enables creators to work across diverse mediums, often resulting in monumental and interactive public art displayed worldwide.

The Box Shop has always thrived on a bit of creative chaos, a “cowboy” spirit that prizes resourcefulness, experimentation, and the courage to take big swings. Sparks fly, ideas stretch, risks get taken. The Box Shop builds on that lineage while constructing the systems that ensure long-term sustainability. The next Development Director should be energized by this frontier, able to capture its story, translate it into philanthropic opportunity, and build the capital and confidence required to fuel the next era.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Development Director will serve as The Box Shop's lead architect for fundraising and external engagement, responsible for mobilizing the resources, relationships, and visibility required to secure The Box Shop's long-term future.

This role is part strategist, part storyteller, and part coalition builder. The Development Director will shape and execute a diversified fundraising strategy (foundation, corporate, individual, and government), steward key partners, and elevate The Box Shop's presence across philanthropic, civic, and arts ecosystems.

This is a high-impact opportunity to build the revenue engine of an iconic creative institution at an inflection point—translating cultural value into philanthropic momentum and ensuring that The Box Shop’s legacy continues to thrive for decades to come.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

FUNDRAISING STRATEGY & EXECUTION

Develop and lead a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes foundation grants, major gifts, annual giving, corporate partnerships, and government funding.
Develop a sustainable revenue mix that aligns with organizational goals, capital needs, and long-term financial resilience.
Manage a portfolio of major donors and institutional funders; cultivate relationships that drive multi-year support.
Oversee prospecting, grantwriting, proposal development, reporting, and ongoing stewardship.
Partner with the Board and ED to support fundraising campaigns, donor events, and high-level cultivation efforts.
EXTERNAL RELATIONS & STORYTELLING

Serve as a visible ambassador for The Box Shop across philanthropy, civic networks, and the arts community.
Articulate the story of The Box Shop—its history, impact, creative energy, and future vision — in ways that build confidence and inspire investment.
Build coalitions and partnerships that expand The Box Shop’s reach, credibility, and influence.
Represent the organization at events, convenings, donor meetings, and public forums.
BOARD & STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT

Partner closely with the Board to activate networks, support relationship management, and strengthen fund development capacity.
Provide clear fundraising dashboards, projections, and strategic insights.
Collaborate with Box Shop artists, tenants, and community partners to gather stories, data, and program impact for fundraising purposes.
DEVELOPMENT OPERATIONS & INFRASTRUCTURE

Build the systems and rhythms needed for a professional development function (CRM, pipelines, reporting).
