Required Experience:

Demonstrated leadership experience in nonprofit management, animal welfare, or a related field
Experience working with a board of directors in a governance-focused structure
Strong financial management skills, including budgeting and fiscal oversight
Proven fundraising experience with donors, grants, and community partnerships
Experience supervising staff and working with volunteers
Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn Illinois nonprofit compliance requirements

The Humane Society of Danville, Illinois is a non-profit, no-kill shelter dedicated to the care and welfare of animals in Danville, Illinois. Our mission is to provide safe shelter for animals in transition, serve as advocates for animals and their people, work to end animal overpopulation and educate the public about compassion and responsibility towards all animals.

Position Overview

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive and administrative leader of the Danville Humane Society and is responsible for the overall management, sustainability, and advancement of the organization. This role partners closely with the Board of Directors to implement strategic priorities, ensure strong financial stewardship, lead fundraising efforts, oversee staff and volunteers, and maintain compliance with all applicable nonprofit regulations in Illinois.

The Executive Director balances strategic leadership with hands-on management and serves as the primary liaison between the board, staff, donors, volunteers, and the broader community.

Organizational Leadership and Governance:

Provide overall leadership and direction for the organization, ensuring alignment with the mission, values, and board-approved strategic goals
Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors by preparing reports, supporting board decision-making, and implementing board policies and directives
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws governing Illinois nonprofit organizations, including required filings, licenses, insurance coverage, and grant compliance
Animal Care and Shelter Operations:

Manage day-to-day operations to ensure efficient, safe, and humane care practices, including oversight of facilities, vendors, and service contracts
Identify and manage organizational risks, respond to operational challenges or crises, and ensure continuity of operations
Oversee all aspects of animal care, intake, housing, medical coordination, and adoption readiness
Ensure animals receive humane, ethical, and appropriate care in accordance with applicable regulations and standards
Coordinate veterinary care, including appointments, treatment decisions, and follow up
Oversee animal behavior assessment, training needs, and safe interaction practices
Ensure accurate animal records are maintained in the shelter’s animal management system
Make informed decisions regarding animal placement, treatment, and welfare
Staff and Volunteer Management

Supervise and support part-time employees and coordinate volunteer engagement, fostering a respectful, mission-driven workplace culture
Provide onboarding, training, and clear expectations for staff and volunteers
Address performance, conduct, and operational issues in a timely and professional manner
Foster a positive and respectful working environment
Coordinate volunteer involvement and ensure appropriate supervision and guidance
Facilities and Equipment

Oversee shelter facilities, grounds, and equipment
Coordinate routine maintenance, repairs, and vendor services
Ensure kennel areas and workspaces remain safe, clean, and functional
Identify facility needs and communicate concerns or repair needs to the Board
Administration and Systems Oversight

Oversee administrative operations, record keeping, and documentation
Maintain responsibility for shelter systems and software, including data accuracy and reporting
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
Develop and maintain operational procedures and documentation
Safeguard access to keys, codes, and system credentials
Community Relations and Public Communication

Lead all fundraising and development activities, including individual giving, grants, sponsorships, events, and donor stewardship, in partnership with the board
Represent the Danville Humane Society within the community, building strong relationships with donors, partners, veterinarians, civic leaders, and the public
Serve as a visible ambassador and spokesperson for the organization, promoting humane education, advocacy, and community engagement
Oversee website and social media content related to animals and shelter operations
Maintain positive relationships with donors, partners, and community members
Financial and Resource Oversight

Oversee the organization’s financial health, including budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, and coordination with external accounting and audit professionals
Support financial processes including donation handling, reporting, and budget tracking
Work with the Board on financial oversight and planning
Ensure appropriate use and care of organizational resources
