Required Experience: Essential Qualifications
A minimum of 5 years of experience as a program or project director in community, youth, and education organizing or education capacity building work. At least 5 years of experience and expertise in racial and educational justice, combined with a deep commitment to student engagement. A minimum of 2 years of direct supervision experience, showcasing effective leadership and team management skills. Expertise in training and facilitation, with a demonstrated ability to engage diverse interest holder audiences. Exceptional written and oral communication skills, ensuring effective conveyance of ideas and information. Outstanding organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines, attention to detail, and thorough follow-through. Proven ability to problem-solve and initiate effective solutions in a dynamic work environment. Thrives in a collaborative team environment, contributing positively to team dynamics and outcomes. Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office and various applications relevant to the role. Willingness to travel 1-2 times a month (overnight) or as needed to client regions. Physical and Functional Job Requirements This role involves performing job duties that may include: Working primarily at a computer workstation for extended periods of time. Compensation The salary for this position is $4,200 per pay period (approximately $100,803 annually), which aligns with all CFJ Director salaries. Through this approach, CFJ is reshaping education and fostering a more just and equitable future for all students in California Position Overview The Organizing Director is responsible for advancing our statewide vision for youth-led organizing, base building, and campaign strategy across multiple regions. This role plays a central part in shaping and implementing CFJ’s political strategy, supervising Regional Lead Organizers, and driving cross-regional alignment in campaign execution, youth leadership development, and movement-building efforts. By co-creating strategies that reflect the realities and demands of the moment, the Organizing Director ensures CFJ remains a powerful force for change led by young people of color. With a strong foundation in grassroots organizing, the Organizing Director brings deep experience in community or youth organizing, coalition work, and team supervision. They lead with a commitment to racial, economic, and gender justice, grounding our campaigns in the lived experiences of youth while building strong alliances and evaluating political opportunities. Internally, the Organizing Director helps cultivate a liberatory organizational culture through staff development, cross-team collaboration, and strategic planning. They hold and evolve the integrity of CFJ’s organizing work, ensuring it remains people-centered, justice-driven, and aligned with our Black liberation values at every level. Additional Details This full-time, exempt position involves discretion and independent judgment and is based out of one of CFJ’s four office locations (Fresno, Long Beach, Oakland, or San Jose). All members of the Organizing Team are required to work in person within their designated community and home office; this is not a hybrid or remote position. The role also requires occasional statewide travel and work on weekends. Able to recruit, develop, and retain employees and to build and maintain an effective team; manages performance, provides meaningful coaching, and terminates non-performers as appropriate Essential Responsibilities Regional & Statewide Campaigns and Alliances (50%) Build organizational power, visibility, and solidarity with key influencers/targets and base-building organizations in the region by developing and leading the regional power-building strategy. Work closely with the regional organizing team to develop the regional strategy. Manage the implementation of regional & statewide campaign goals and lead the assessment and evaluation process. Lead and/or contribute to regional alliance building (projects can be cross-sectoral, for example, electoral, educational, or economic) that advance CFJ’s mission and vision. Support regional and statewide campaign implementation through research, documentation, internal learning and training, external capacity building, and network development. Serve as an active member of the Statewide Team (work with Executive Director, Senior Strategy Directors, Organizing Directors, and Policy and Communications Director) to develop strategy, implement, and strengthen our statewide unified campaign. Ensure that projects and programs provide opportunities for leadership development among our members and are member-informed and driven. Conduct regular assessments of the landscape and power structure that inform our local and statewide strategy in service of the organization's long-term strategic orientation. Regional & Statewide Power Building (25%) Provide strategic leadership in the development of a regional and statewide base-building strategy, including the design of annual base-building drives, regional support and accountability, and developing and maintaining statewide shared tools and systems. Support statewide civic engagement strategy and field campaigns to engage young voters of color and CFJ alums in electoral organizing. Support statewide & regional allies (grassroots base building, policy, and advocacy groups) and decision maker engagement to build relationships and power for organizing priorities. Supervision (10%) Supervise and develop staff: Provide consistent supervision, coaching, and leadership development for direct reports through bi/weekly 1:1s, training, and feedback. Lead effective team meetings and coordination: Plan, schedule, and facilitate recurring team meetings and check-ins (weekly/bi-weekly), including agendas, tools, and clear next steps to support alignment, collaboration, and follow-through. Drive accountability toward goals: Guide staff in creating and executing work plans; track progress toward team, regional, and organization-wide goals through evaluation, metrics, and structured accountability practices. Strengthen team culture and cross-team collaboration: Foster a supportive, values-aligned team culture and coordinate with internal teams, departments, and external allies as needed to advance strategy and sustain coalition/community relationships. Organizational Leadership Responsibilities (15%) Fundraising & Development: Participate in organization-wide grassroots fundraising campaigns and support philanthropic fundraising efforts, including proposal development, reporting, donor stewardship, relationship-building, and funder site visits. Shared Leadership & Staff Participation: Actively participate in all required staff spaces, including meetings, retreats (virtual and in person), and organization-wide campaign events; rotate facilitation and note-taking responsibilities as part of shared leadership practices. Culture & Committee Engagement: Contribute to a healthy organizational culture by participating in culture-building efforts and serving on at least one organization-wide or cross-functional committee (e.g., staff planning, political education, retreat planning), as aligned with organizational needs. Regional & Office Responsibilities: Engage in region-specific responsibilities, including participation in campaign-related events/actions as needed, regional meetings, community-building activities, and shared office or site-based roles that support team cohesion and effective operations.
